After occupying the headlines in the national press, on TV and across the media for weeks, the so called 'Match.Com Rape Trial' concluded yesterday at Derby Crown Court, with Jason Lawrance being found guilty of 5 counts of rape, one attempted rape and one case of sexual assault. He was jailed for life. The Trial Judge Gregory Dickinson, talked of his hopes that lessons could be learned from this trial and asked prosecutors for extra supervision of online dating sites, with Alan Charles, Commissioner of Crime and Police for Derbyshire saying that he felt that 'The internet was the darkest alley of all'. Said Mr Charles: ‘Personal safety advice used to incorporate avoiding walking alone down dark alleys at night but the Internet can be the darkest alley of all’. Powerful words indeed and a warning that should draw the attention of all decent people to the dangers of meeting people online and taking sensible and safe precautions if you are still happy to use this form of dating to meet potential partners. Mr Charles continued: ‘The popularity of any website where personal information is required does raise the question of security and more needs to be done to keep people aware of the dangers.’ Match.Com were severely criticised in court and from the witness box victim number 3 stated that "They didn't seem to give a damn" when she rang to report the rape, in fact on 4 occasions Match.Com were said to have been asked to remove Lawrance's profile and each time they refused.
