We all know that trust is one of the key ingredients to a successful long term relationship. No relationship can function without it. If you consider why many couples break up, many of them break up due to breaches of trust and that is a very serious concern. When you give trust you must not abuse it, however, it seems many people do exactly that. All relationship psychologists and basically anyone who has ever been in a relationship will tell you that they believe trust is the most important foundation for a successful relationship. So how do we go about building trust?
- Notice your actions - Actions speak louder than words, it’s a phrase we are all familiar with but this powerful phrase can help build a lot of trust with your partner. It’s as simple as literally doing what you’ve said you will do or giving romantic gestures.
- Show your vulnerability - Being able to show your vulnerability does wonders for being able to build trust. Your partner will notice and this is going to create a lot of trust because they will feel that vulnerability themselves. This is a vital part of building trust in a relationship.
- Being open to criticism and feedback - The reason this helps to build trust is because it helps to create a connection with one another. If you can’t accept criticism and feedback then it’s not going to help forge a connection or any trust with your new partner.
- Trusting in their independence - Every person in a relationship needs some level of independence. This means some time to pursue activities and hobbies that don’t require you and this means you need to trust them to do so. The faith you put in them will be noticed and helps to build trust.
We know that building trust isn’t always easy especially as a mature aged single who may find it very difficult given that they would have been in the same relationship for so long.
